How can the EU be more trustworthy and digitally secure? ECIL report presented to Gunther Oettinger

On 25th January 2016, at the International Cybersecurity Forum in Lille, the European Cybersecurity Industry Leaders (ECIL) workgroup presented a report to European Commissioner for the Digital Economy Gunther Oettinger, focusing on the need to make the EU more trustworthy and digitally secure.
The report includes a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing Europe’s Cyber security industry as well as strengthening the cooperation between Member States and foster EU involvement in cyber security legislation and standardization.
Some key measures were identified as follows:

  • Create a Level Playing field within Europe and promote it internationally
  • Enlarge European Cyber security monitoring and advising
  • Recommend additional regulatory measures
  • Reinforce cooperation between the European Member States
  • Foster EU involvement in Cyber security legislation, standardization and labelling
  • Support the development of an academic ecosystem for Cyber security and utilize Research and Innovation instruments
  • Create a supporting financial and fiscal environment for European Cyber security areas of excellence
  • Positively consider market consolidation to allow the development of European
  • cyberchampions

These fundamental measures will also contribute to the creation of the Digital Single Market, as the development of a Cyber Security policy which promotes high standards of protection for European citizens and businesses is one of the main pillar of the EU strategy.
