The Austalian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has recently been victim of a massive hacker attack.
Since the BoM is closely linked to multiple government agencies, including the Department of Defense, the attack has raised fears that potentially sensitive national security information may have been compromised.
The BoM supercomputer provides weather and climate forecasting, tsunami warnings, tide predictions, water resources and even space weather, but could be viewed as a potential gateway to a host of government agencies that have even more sensitive information.
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, many offical sources have confirmed the attack and government officials are “confident” the attack came from China.
There were no further details on which systems had been affected and whether information was taken; however government sources stated that could take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to fix.
There was no immediate comment from the Chinese embassy in Canberra.
