In our daily business lives, digital tools are becoming much more commonplace in the workplace but many of us are unaware of potential exposure to cyber risks.
On top of this, we have such a wide choice of IT platforms and tools to choose from, often making it hard to know which ones offer the best protection against cyber threats.
To help overcome barriers to cybersecurity, four European Funded Projects have co-created a self-assessment tool that allows SMEs from any sector to test their knowledge and awareness of basic security concepts.
This online assessment, located externally from CYBERWISER.eu website, is specifically designed to help SMEs find gaps in their practical knowledge and implement the improvements they need for greater protection.

Anyone who successfully completes the assessment will receive a certificate.

The 4 IT Projects that created this tool

The idea of creating a self-assessment tool in order to highlight the gaps knowledge of IT Professionals came from 4 EU Projects:

  • CyberSec4Europe the project activities range from combining formal, professional and non-traditional cybersecurity skills;

  • Cyberwatching.eu provides a European cybersecurity and privacy Marketplace;

  • SMESEC proposes a cost-effective framework composed of specific cyber-security tool-kits to support SMEs;

  • CYBERWISER.eu delivers a flexible, risk-centred, capacity-building platform, combining a theoretical and practical approach to cybersecurity with innovative features (including a cutting edge cyber range).

Cybersecurity training - The customisable approach

The problem with traditional learning is it doesn’t prepare trainees for the job they’ll be doing and it is usually based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach. This traditional approach while better than nothing isn’t ideal, because it doesn’t adequately replicate what the trainee will be dealing with in its day-to-day work. For most organisations indeed, investing in cybersecurity training not only depends on internal factors, but also on the ‘fit’ between training demands and the training offer.

As hackers get bolder so does cyber security training

Cybersecurity training - What do organisations need?

Human error has become a major weak point in cyber security today; one that is easily exploited by cyber criminals. In fact, according to a cybersecurity report by London-based consultancy Willis Towers Watson “approximately 90% of all cyber claims are the result of some type of human error or behaviour “. On top of this we are also experiencing a large scale skills gap in the professional field;

What is a Cyber Range?

Recently published on our Technology Watch, an extract from the Cyberwatching.eu white paper. It provides insights into the what and how of cyber range technology and explains why it’s a key asset in the training of cybersecurity professionals.

Cyber Ranges provide a multipurpose virtual environment in which organisations can test critical capabilities and assess how effectively they integrate people, processes and technology to protect their strategic information, services and assets. By facilitating high-fidelity simulations, they can improve stability, security and performance of cyberinfrastructures and information technology (IT), operations technology (OT) and industrial control systems (ICS).

Because of their ability to represent real-world cyber threat scenarios in a virtual environment, they also present an opportunity to enhance organisational training capabilities.

Cyberrange

On February 14th 2019, CYBERWISER.eu presented its first webinar on the importance of advanced cyber security skills for effective and rapid response in a fast-evolving and complex cyber risk landscape.

Three expert panelists, have shared with us their knowledge on cybersecurity capacity building.

Antonio Alvarez Romero from ATOS (project coordinator) has introduced the project.

Liliana Ribeiro from EDP has stressed the importance of cybersecurity on Critical Energy Infrastructures, starting from the experience of Energia de Portugal.

Matteo Merialdo from RHEA has explained the concept of cyber range and has talked about the innovative aspects in cyber range solutions for simulation and training that CYBERWISER.eu will adopt in its lifetime.

For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of cyber range, we are talking about a recent concept that defines a multi purpose virtualization environment - it can vary from a few virtual machines or even a thousand for very complex exercises. Cyber ranges can be instantiated to mimic real environments, thus giving possibilities for training but also for research and developement (for example in space missions) and for penetration tests.

The big advantage of cyber range is that it is close to a real environment, so very useful for testing and training purposes, but it is completely safe because disconnected from the real one. Moreover, the freedom offered by CYBERWISER.eu of configuring next generation cyber ranges adaptable to different purposes, is invaluable.

During the webinar the attendees answered a small survey on cyber security awareness and on their interest in the CYBERWISER.eu Open Pilot Stream. Watch the results here:
