Cybersecurity training - The customisable approachThe problem with traditional learning is it doesn’t prepare trainees for the job they’ll be doing and it is usually based on a “one-size-fits-all” approach. This traditional approach while better than nothing isn’t ideal, because it doesn’t adequately replicate what the trainee will be dealing with in its day-to-day work. For most organisations indeed, investing in cybersecurity training not only depends on internal factors, but also on the ‘fit’ between training demands and the training offer.

Cybersecurity training - What do organisations need?Human error has become a major weak point in cyber security today; one that is easily exploited by cyber criminals. In fact, according to a cybersecurity report by London-based consultancy Willis Towers Watson “approximately 90% of all cyber claims are the result of some type of human error or behaviour “. On top of this we are also experiencing a large scale skills gap in the professional field;

Cybersecurity - What is the right training approach for my organisation? There are numerous players delivering training in cybersecurity around the world. Mostly driven by the non-specific academic approach. However, we are beginning to see the development of a more targeted approach to training, this comes on the back of recommendations from European cyber agencies. The approach advocated by CYBERWISER.eu mixes theoretical with practical and is fully customisable to maximise return of investment in training for organisations of all size. You can try out one of our freely available “Open Pilots”, here.

Building the Cybersecurity Workforce of tomorrowThe agenda of the full-day Open Pilots Workshop held at Pisa's elegant Domus Comeliana on 5 November included presentations from consortium partners and also from representaitives of the four recently established European Cybersecurity Competence Centers. All expert speakers made themselves available to delegates for one-on-one consultations during a dedicated question and answers and networking session. Simulations and excercises were prepared for them in order to test our cyber range solution. Browse the agenda here to select and view a presentation: Click to see all the presentations |
Meet our Open Pilot Users:Representing a cross-section of industrial, academic, and technology realities across Europe and the UK, the organisations enrolled in the first tranche of open pilots may each nominate up to 200 employees to receive between three and six months of customised cybersecurity training on the CYBERWISER.eu cyber range platform. During the workshop, each Open Pilot user joined the panels with a one-minute pitch presentation introducting their organisation and their expectations towards the open pilot process. Welcome to the CYBERWISER.eu newsletter!
In this issue, an in-depth look at the technology behind the just-completed CYBERWISER.eu platform, our first major milestone, plus excerpts from the new Cyberwatching.eu white paper, news from ECSO, and more.
Behind the scenes: an in-depth look at the technology inside the CYBERWISER.eu Platform
Have you ever wondered how a Cyber Range platform looks from the inside? We can show you what the CYBERWISER.eu consortium has developed over the last year, from the platform design to the development and integration of the various components which will provide a complete, integrated and fully customisable cybersecurity training solution.
CYBERWISER.eu has been designed in a modular format to meet the specific needs of individual learners and corporate teams alike. The solution will incorporate an independent cyber range platform as well as a comprehensive suite of both free and paid-for web-based certificate courses.
We will keep you abreast of the new specifications and training environments, monitored by regression testing sessions, that will be added to the platform in the upcoming months.

What is a Cyber Range?
Recently published on our Technology Watch, an extract from the Cyberwatching.eu white paper. It provides insights into the what and how of cyber range technology and explains why it’s a key asset in the training of cybersecurity professionals.
Cyber Ranges provide a multipurpose virtual environment in which organisations can test critical capabilities and assess how effectively they integrate people, processes and technology to protect their strategic information, services and assets. By facilitating high-fidelity simulations, they can improve stability, security and performance of cyberinfrastructures and information technology (IT), operations technology (OT) and industrial control systems (ICS).
Because of their ability to represent real-world cyber threat scenarios in a virtual environment, they also present an opportunity to enhance organisational training capabilities.

Take part in the ECSO Survey and help European organisations raise cyber resilience!
Deadline: 05 October 2019
The survey addresses the European Cybersecurity community in order to better understand its needs and requirements. With your help, the participating network of Cybersecurity Competence Centers will be able to deliver long-lasting solutions for a secure European cyberspace.
The survey is published by ECSO (The European Cybersecurity Organisation), together with pilot projects ECHO Cybersecurity, SPARTA, CONCORDIA Project and CyberSec4Europe. ECHO, in collaboration with the other pilots, will consolidate the survey responses and produce a paper, expected at the beginning of November 2019.

On February 14th 2019, CYBERWISER.eu presented its first webinar on the importance of advanced cyber security skills for effective and rapid response in a fast-evolving and complex cyber risk landscape.
Three expert panelists, have shared with us their knowledge on cybersecurity capacity building.
Antonio Alvarez Romero from ATOS (project coordinator) has introduced the project.
Liliana Ribeiro from EDP has stressed the importance of cybersecurity on Critical Energy Infrastructures, starting from the experience of Energia de Portugal.
Matteo Merialdo from RHEA has explained the concept of cyber range and has talked about the innovative aspects in cyber range solutions for simulation and training that CYBERWISER.eu will adopt in its lifetime.
For those who are unfamiliar with the concept of cyber range, we are talking about a recent concept that defines a multi purpose virtualization environment - it can vary from a few virtual machines or even a thousand for very complex exercises. Cyber ranges can be instantiated to mimic real environments, thus giving possibilities for training but also for research and developement (for example in space missions) and for penetration tests.
The big advantage of cyber range is that it is close to a real environment, so very useful for testing and training purposes, but it is completely safe because disconnected from the real one. Moreover, the freedom offered by CYBERWISER.eu of configuring next generation cyber ranges adaptable to different purposes, is invaluable.
During the webinar the attendees answered a small survey on cyber security awareness and on their interest in the CYBERWISER.eu Open Pilot Stream. Watch the results here:

CYBERWISER.eu: discussions at the kick off meeting in Madrid:
The following project partners presented CYBERWISER.eu at the Kick Off meeting in Madrid on 3rd and 4th of October 2018.
The mission of the project is that of fostering the creation of a cyber security culture across the continent and to train professionals with the help of immersive excercises and - affordable - simulated environments that mirror reality.
The platform will be piloted in three different contexts:
- Energy generation and distribution: Energias de Portugal, the major energy provider in Portugal, has over 12000 collaborators; they can be vulnerable to any threat and incident and cyber security is a major concern for them.
- Railroad transport: Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane will benefit with use cases for technical employees and awareness for non-technical employees.
- University training: University of Pisa will use the platform for master student's training.
Moreover, everyone has hance to participate to the open pilot stream and become early adopter of the platform.
